It can be very important, it really depends on the subject and lens geometry. For instance when shooting panos in very limited confines with fisheye lenses where objects are at varying distances the nodal point needs to be set very precisely. A few years ago I had a Kaidan Kiwi+ head but found it far too imprecise to set repeatedly when changing lens/camera combos.
