The screws are actually "JIS" cross points, using the correct screw driver is very important as is having a good handle so that you can apply the correct amount of torque and forward pressure. A driver handle which uses an industrial HIOS bit built for mechanized assembly is ideal. They are excellent screw- drivers and although not cheap should be available as a Sony spare part and will last you a lifetime. http://www.hios.com/eng/product/bit/bit.html You can see a pic of the sony driver + HIOS bit in this old shot: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~distudio/pentax_nicd_pack/28.jpg They sometimes have threadlock applied, often the application of a small soldering iron with a clean tip applied to the head for a few seconds can make the threadlock just fluid enough to help with removal. Solvents should be a last resort. > Second I'm not sure where to attack next. Photos of my progress are on the > web > page below. Any suggestions on what I should attempt to unscrew next? Under the zoom ring are a set of contact fingers which feed back FL to the camera body, I don't recall how to remove this ring however I know I have successfully in the past. I'm sorry I can't offer more but just be careful as it's easy to damage the electrical contacts.
