Meant to ask .... was the herring you bought made on premises or a branded variety sold in jars? If branded, do you recall what brand? I've really got a yen for herring since seeing your post, and I'd like to try something different. Usually I just buy what's available in stores here, but sometimes, when desiring something special, I go back to my NYC roots and mail order from a local business there:
