I had not heard of this before. I thought you shoot portraits as open as possible.

That depends on the kind of portrait you're going for. At f/3.5, you might not be able to get the entire subject in sharp focus. It might be preferable to shoot at a smaller aperture and do any selective softening after the shoot.
