That depends on the kind of portrait you're going for. At f/3.5, you might not be able to get the entire subject in sharp focus. It might be preferable to shoot at a smaller aperture and do any selective softening after the shoot.

I was using my 77 on the istD the other day, and found (after the fact, of course) that I had limited my DOF too much, and I hadn't secured quite enough depth of field on the subject.
I think I was shooting close to wide open, and should probably have been closer to 5.6.
