Mike, I can't speak for your area, but I think some species of songbirds
birds have a habit of rising early in general. There's something called the
"dawn chorus" that gets going in the early morning hours in some parts of
the world.

In the summer, the little darlings start even earlier. But in winter they have four hours to go before the sun shows itself. Being so active in the winter months does them a power of no good. Birds walk a very fine line over the dark months between being active enough not to freeze to death and not using up their resources before there is more food to be had in spring. Thinking the sun is coming up when it is just the glow from streetlamps does not help at all.
