you lost something by being converted into a JPEG in the first place, whether by the camera or by the software. it's up to you to decide if the loss is too great or not. i've been shooting only RAW since i first obtained a camera that was capable of producing RAW files. that was before the *istD. i think you are losing half of the advantage of choosing a DSLR over a digital P&S by not shooting RAW.
