I sometimes use a Pentax 200 f2.5 with a Pentax 1.4S converter. This
combo works great, and has the versatility of having the option 200mm or
300mm lens.

I understand... I often wish for more space between the tripod mount 
and the lens barrel as I like to use the mount as a handle to carry the 
lens/camera.  IIRC my modified 300mm is still OK for this but the 
FA*400/5.6 is difficult to carry this way, even with my thin little 
fingers.
