I've never heard IS slammed by people who've used it.  It's not the
end-all-be-all that some describe it as, and there's admittedly been a
lot of marketing hype over it that some people have exaggerated almost
into a mythology, but the fact remains that it's a very useful way to
get rid of some camera shake at slower shutter speeds.

I find that I can handhold IS lenses about 2 stops slower than I can
non-IS lenses and get comparable sharpness.  I shoot MedF now, but if
I was shooting 35mm handheld, I'd take an IS system over a non-IS one,
all other things being equal.
