There are a couple of very good references available.
The first one is a book. "Real World Camera Raw with Adobe Photoshop CS" by Bruce Fraser. Here's a link to the books page on Amazon:

The second is a page full of Adobe White Papers, free for the download. Of particular interest are a four-part white paper by Jeff Schewe, "Digital Workflow for Raw Processing." and "Highlight Recovery in Adobe Camera Raw" by the same author.
There are several other interesting white papers on the same page.
