i tend not to make any apriory assumptions about the bidders.  the fact is,
you (and i) have no idea what's driving them (each of them individually).

sniping helps against *any* bidder. i think you don't understand why and when 
sniping works. 

it doesn't work if and only if you have a good chance to buy at the
opening bid price.
it's not (just) a theory.
