I had little luck with vaseline. I have found it worked well when it was first applied, then the lubrication deteriorate quickly. Vaseline is also very sensative to temperature, and got more sticky when cold. Which grease to use depends on which lens. Some older lenses had heavier damping grease, while modern F/FA lenses have very light grease. The aperture rings of LIMITED lenses have almost no grease. I have got some NYE grease from Fargo and found them very stable with excellent lubrication, but might be a little expensive if you need very little. Btw, oil should not be used.

Don't use sewing machine oil. It flows too easily and can find it's
way onto the aperture blades.

If you can't get a light grease easily then use vaseline (which is in
fact a light grease).
