Thanks for the file. If you'd care to convert it to a JPG, (lowest
quality is fine) and email me that as well, I'd appreciate it.

I'm aware of dcraw. But I'm not at all satisfied with the colour
balance you get from running Pentax raw files through it. This was
one of the reasons why I decided to perform my own experiments.

At present I'm concentrating rather more on DNG. That provides a
better interface between manufacturer-specific proprietary file formats
and other conversion software. I may well end up producing a PEF-to-DNG
converter (platform neutral, so it would run on Linux as well as Windows)
which would optionally apply the same sort of colour pre-processing Pentax
seem to do; my goal would be a DNG file which, when fed into something
like Adobe PhotoShop Elements, produces a JPEG file which has the same
colour balance as one produced by the otherwise-not-very-good software
supplied by Pentax (and, more importantly, by the firmware in the camera).

Don't count on it. The Photo Browser manual shipped with the *ist-DS refers
to the remote assistant, but specifically calls out the fact that this is a
*ist-D product. I'm not sure it's ever intended to work with the *ist-DS
