I suggest that you don't bother to store your images in a database what I do is have a simple database with a reference to the location of the actual image. That way I have the flexibility to handle images off line. E.g archived on CD/DVD or removable hard disk or even negative/slide. What you definitely need to work out is a good referencing system.
