I've made it a point to remove images from my memory cards by reformatting 
them, in camera, hopefully preventing future capture issues which I'm led to 
believe can happen by simply deleting.

I'd try re-formatting in the camera first - it's possible that the technique 
you used for moving the files to a hard drive (or whatever) has not freed up 
the space used correctly.
