An old rule of thumb used to be, that the DOF lies 1/3 behind and 2/3 ahead
of the focusing distance. So I guess a little behind is perhaps better than
a little ahead :-).

I focused on the eye, but as you can see, the eye is at the very back of acceptable focus, while the entire beak is sharp. I wouldn't mind the camera to select a slightly more forward point of focus.
