I don't see why the need for separate cameras or sensors. In fact, I've been pretty satisfied with what my CP 990 can do out-of-camera in B&W. I've just posted a few comparisons on my photo.net "portfolio". They are nothing to write home about. i was more interested in comparing the B&W images with color than in the theme. :-) I put up both color and black and white of the camera. If someone wants, see what you can do with the color, and see if you can "better" what the camera did. I tried, and couldn't make a more pleasing result.
