What would be a fair or reasonable test?
Any test of this sort is going to have some apples vs. oranges component to it.
What prompted my comment was seeing the very large colour prints that my friend Kim Digney is making from 35mm negatives.
Good optical prints are done on enlargers, not printers, so I would put a good printer in a darkroom with a negative of a scene, and put a good digital manipulator feed a massaged digital file into a colour printer (one of the photo paper types, since that limits one major variable) and let them do what they do.
Digital can look very good indeed, but a well printed negative (my opinion only) still has an edge.
