I think Jimmy Carter decreed that the USA would join step with the rest of the world and adopt the metric system.
Unfortunately, he seems to have been somewhat ahead of his time.

I can understand why mankind hasn't given up war. During a war you get to drive tanks through the sides of buildings and shoot foreigners - two things that are usually frowned on during peacetime.
