Hi Jens, There is nothing to wonder about, you submitted it for judgement, it was judged. The judge may have no knowledge of or attachment to or empathy with the subject nor will they know why you shot as you did, they just apply their formula for judgement criterion and whether it aligns with yours or not is just pure luck. It's a good pic considering your description of how it was shot but if I were judging it without the benefit of that information I would suggest that you could have used a reflector in order to add some subtle lighting to the foreground areas in deeps shadow.
