Just heard from Pentax Canada regarding my 'banding' problem. Pentax Japan has not seen the problem before but thought that there might be a hardware QA problem with a batch of *ist-DS's, possibly related to poorly soldered connections.
They offered me a replacement. However since I've not seen any more occurances of the problem since I reported it I declined. We left it that if the problem reoccurs that I will report it, and get a replacement.
