This is my practice too, though I did get caught the other night. I ventured out with used batteries in my *ist D and a spare set in case they ran out (which they did). I didn't see any of the low battery warning signs as I was working in the dark with the camera over my head for a lot of the shots so it just stopped working. Fortunately I changed my memory card and batteries at the same time but because since the camera hadn't been switched off the new card started writing files with duplicate file names (starting from the number when the camera was originally switched on). This has happened to me before and it's a PITA, I'm just lucky I changed cards as I suspect it would have over written the old files.
