It's not about intensity. That can be balanced with the f stop. It's
about diffusion. Of course the diffusion varies with fabrics and
diffuser types, but reflective light seems to me to be more diffuse
than light that is passed through a fabric, all other things being
equal. Of course it's a pointless discussion, because results will vary
widely with reflector type and the amount of diffusion achieved by any
one softbox design. In other words, results will vary. Test your
equipment and determine what's best for you and best for any particular
shot.
