I can't provide much help. I don't know how they shoot Playboy centerfolds these days, but I can try to find out. I suspect they use large format digital. I know they did shoot huge chromes in the past. I don't think they contact printed them. I believe they made their color separations from the transparencies just as other publications did. A print would be useless for offset printing. Although they probably made some for display and portfolios.

I'm not totally conversant with how a film image gets made into seperations for publication, but the centerfolds in the old days were produced from unenlarged Ektachromes, as opposed to enlarging the images, which is what you would do if the image had been shot on a smaller format film.
