Not just Pentax. When Canon switched from FD to EOS, the ring vanished. Before I stopped using Pentax bodies, I couldn't imagine handling gear that clumsily didn't have an aperture ring. A couple of years on, and now I can't imagine using gear that clumsily includes an aperture ring!
