Tongue-in-cheek? No, I'd venture he was deadly serious because he had a large bet hanging on his ability to gather in enough disciples and adherants...

That would be L. Ron Hubbard. And, no, I think it was not he...
Furthermore, L.Ron wasn't much of a SciFi writer, either!
