Keppler's SLR column is all about the new trend to zooms starting at 24mm.
He provides a handy comparison table of the various brands, including
prices. Keppler is too gentlemanly to emphasize this, but the Pentax at
$600 stands out like a sore thumb. It is the most expensive of the bunch,
with the shortest zoom range. At $600, it is $100 more than the Nikon
24-120, and $150 more than the Tamron 24-135mm, both of which have tested
out as very good lenses. (The latter reviewed in this very issue, with
central resolution rated "excellent" at every focal length.) About the only
thing the Pentax has to boast about is that it is the lightest of the bunch.
At this price, it is going to have to provide really superb optical and
mechanical quality to make it a competitive buy against the Tamron, which is
available in a Pentax mount.
