Peter, you can connect an *ist Ds to your iMac using the USB port just fine. If you are transferring pics from the camera to the iMac then depending on how large the files are and how many of them, it could take some time - USB 1 is a lot slower than USB 2. Instead, why not buy a FireWire card reader, and then take the SD card out of the *ist Ds and place it in the reader - it will transfer the pics to your iMac much much faster.
