I'm sure that everyone really cares what I'm up to on weekends <g>, but this will truly be a Pentax Day for your humble servant.
The weekend nearest Feb 14 is traditionally the Ice Race Weekend for couriers and courier wanna-bees (yes, apparently they do exist, boggling though that may seem) here in Toronto. So, of course, choice of equipment is important, not only for the cycling madness, but for the after-party, and (new for this year) the after-after-party. Last year's party provided me with one of my all-time faves: http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=2188556&size=lg so who knows what this year will bring? In terms of equipment, I'll bring both the MX and LX, one loaded with colour print film the other B&W (I'm thinking TriX, as they're doing it in the evening this year, although the rink will be brightly lit). I've got 1/2 a roll left of Fuji Neopan 1600 that I've been pushing one stop that I can pop in if needed (might save that for the party). I'll likely burn around 4 or 5 rolls. Lenses? Most of what I think are my best shots are very wide angle, as I can stand in the infield and get a couple of feet from the racers, panning as they rush past. So, the Viv S1 24-48 zoom, the Viv 2.8 19mm, and new for this year, the Zenitar 16mm fisheye will all get extensive use. A long zoom for the "coming down the straightaway, right into the camera" look will help. I'm thinking Viv S1 3.8 70-210 will be a good tool for that. And, the Pentax k 1.2 50mm will be usefull for the afterparty available light shots when I want to put the flash away. It should be a fun day. If nothing else, the camera's a great social tool, and since couriers are used to me hanging about with a camera, they're pretty relaxed when I put camera to eye (assuming I'm using my viewfinder). Well, off to buy film and batteries (for flash). Photo report to follow... cheers, frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson
