I use TTL on a Sigma EF 500 DG and the *istD without problems. Generally for shooting people at close range, you're not going to get good results with direct flash. Use an omnibounce or direct the flash off a ceiling.
The original poster is using an ist, not an istD. His problem sounds remarkably like the LX flash refusal syndrome.
