There's a rational for keeping the 1.7. The instructions that come with the Autobellows M states that
the M 1.7 50mm has a flatter plane of focus than the 50 f1.4. Since all the 1.7's have the same basic
optical formula as all of the 1.4's as well. You could assume that the 1.7 would give better results on
a bellows or lens extensions. But that's just an assumption.

ah ha, so you're the one who nabbed that auction from me. ;-)

I found a pristine, in the box F50/1.7, got it for a very
reasonable dollar. So I'm wondering whether there's any
particular rationale to ordering up a new FA50/1.4 and auction
this one off again. I also have an A50/1.4 already.

Ha! B&H probably saw that those very nice lenses were going
for as much as $255 on ebay and decided there was life in
Pentax yet! I just got a pristine FA50 1.4 bundled with a
clean ZX-5n on ebay for $300 and feel it was a good deal.

It might be true, though, that the FA primes will turn out to
be Pentax's last great glass and at some point you just won't
be able to get them anymore.

I can understand why mankind hasn't given up war. During a war you get to drive tanks through the sides of buildings and shoot foreigners - two things that are usually frowned on during peacetime.
