i look at 100% crops at f5.6 or f8 all the time, because that is what i shoot often, and many lenses with excellent reputations from pre-*istD days don't stand the transition. even on slides, many of the lenses talked about here as being exellent aren't acceptable for me.

As an example, when you look at 100% crops of images taken wide open, you
are not only judging the lens - you are also judging the focussing ...
unless you made sure that the focussing was VERY accurate (i.e. done
manually  with a loupe). Autofocus is not good enough here.
