I agree. The DA 16-45 is an excellent wide for the *istD(S). It's the only zoom I use for serious work. And it does provide good manual focus. One can even focus manually when it's on autofocus, as it's equipped with that clutching device. A very good lens by any measure.

I didn't mean for a DSLR specifically. IAC, the idea of using
a
zoom is something I've not come to grips with - I generally
don't
like them and, with one exception, sold every one I had - and
the small aperture is also something I've never used, with the
exception of a couple of wides in the 3.5 - 4.0 range.
Variable
aperture is a frightening thing as it doesn't allow me to meter
properly. Plus I did say manual focus. Isn't the DA auto
focus?
I may just go ahead and grab a 20/2.8 at some point and see how
I
like it. Thanks for your thoughts, though.

a) I don't like zoom lenses either, in general. But when they're the best tool for the job, well, I go with the best tool for the job. The 16-45 is simply an excellent lens, better than most of the wide primes at the extreme end.

b) just because a lens has autofocus capability doesn't mean you
cannot focus it manually. I focus the FA31/1.8 manually quite
often, same for the F50/1.7. I haven't had the DA16-45 very long
as yet, but it focuses manually very nicely.

c) If you want to cover a 24x36 film format, DA lenses are not
the right solution.
