Hi Arthur,
I'm not familiar with the wide angle lenses of the EX series (I
only had a old 18/3.5 in Nikon mount in the past) but the
(former?) fellow PDMLer Michele Pozzi is very happy with his EX
20-40/2.8 (I could say he *was* very happy, because he is
switching brands... :-( ).
I own and use, with wonderful results, the EX 70-200/2.8. I
couldn't be happier with it (the only - lesser - flaw, if it may
be called that way, is the fact that its focusing ring turns the
wrong way. It stays disabled when in AF, though, and the feel in
manual focus is great). Compared to the Pentax FA 80-200/2.8 it
wins wrt weight (300g less...) and (according to MTF tests of a
magazine I trust) sharpness at the long end, being equal at the
short end. The build quality is great. I made several excellent
30x45 prints from it. The only thing I do not like ''in the
field'' is its minimum focusing of 180cm (the Pentax is 140cm),
but I rarely use it so close to the subject (especially on
digital).
In the past I had great results with a budget Sigma 28-70/2.8-4
too, cheap build but great sharpness (too bad the flare control
was, as usual for the old Sigma lenses, quite poor).
Another friend of mine owns a EX 17-35/2.8-4 which is very good
for the money, quite sharp and very well built, but suffers from
heavy flare under few circumstances (not as much as my old 18mm
but still...). I recall Paul Stenquist owns (or used to own) one
in Pentax mount, he should have more experience for sure.
Hope this helps.
Ciao,
Gianfranco
