Hi Amita, I use black velvet for some table top work. In fact, I used it for the salt and pepper shakers in this month's PUG. Canvas tarps can be nice for larger subjects, and you can spray paint them. Paper roll backdrops are okay when you want a smooth backdrop, and they're not as expesive as cloth. Paul
