GN/D = A or GN = A x D
"A" being the aperture/f-stop
"D" being the distance

GN 32 (meter) means f32 at a distance of 1 meter. Or f16 at a distance of 2
meters... etc.

Some of us remember the time before the invention of the "computer flash"
:-)

GN is guide number. A higher guide number simply means it produces a
brighter, more powerful flash when used at full power. The higher the guide
number the better one can deal with difficult exposure situations, such as
subjects far away from the camera or the use of reflectors. Because the head
both rotates and tilts, it can be bounced off the ceiling when the camera is
held vertically and the flash is mounted on the hot shoe.
