I am not sure about Italy, but in Poland wire transfer is the most
popular method of payment for online auctions, surely the cheapest and
easiest with online banking at both sides.
Also across-the-pond transfers seem to be cheapest this way, unless
seller accepts (foreign) credit cards directly.
In your case all 'risk' is on the buyer, who is willing to wire you the
$$ first.
I do not think there is any risk  giving out your bank account  number.
The only thing anyone can use your acc. number for is to wire you some
money :)

Comments on some simple things that cannot be done in Europe would
require much stronger language than allowed here...
