Leaving my image files and audio files out of the equation, everything else on the data partition of our main household computer can be backed up onto a single CD-R (and is, every month at least). That includes all our email for 10 years, tax return and electronic banking data files, etc., etc. [The image files, mind you, take up tens of gigabytes]
