Personally, I don't find that the focus confirmation is always accurate enough for my tastes, though I'll agree that it's often hard to focus on the screen on something at the edge of frame. But you're right, it's a mystery

... which is why I truly lament the lack of split-screen focus aid on the newer cameras. It was always quick, easy, extremely accurate on the old P-30T. Is the metering on the -D or -DS done though the pentaprism somehow so such a focus screen isn't possible anymore? If not, I think that one of the "accessory" replacement focus screens should include one... I know I'd buy one.
