Herb, really!
Only on this list could you find somebody who will take a piece of good news about Pentax, and find a way to negate it.
Surely the Japanese market is the second largest market in the world, by country. It is presumably indicative, to some degree, of other markets, and it would be strange therefore if the DS wasn't selling pretty well in other markets, too.
During most of last year the DS wasn't available. Now that it is, it's doing better than any other single DSLR save the recently introduced Minolta, which is the first DSLR from that company, and as such bound to sell well initially.
The rising demand for old Pentax lenses in America and Europe (and probably also other markets) suggests high sales of the DS in those markets, too. Or is it because there is a new breed of film photographers, busily buying up old MXen etc, at bargain prices and then paying over the odds for lenses to go with them? Possibly, but I don't think so.
Let's raise a cheer for the DS. It's success will lead to more good lenses, and improved bodies. And perhaps the Minolta's success will encourage Pentax to brush off their IS patents. Though IS doesn't interest me (because of the likely cost), it may keep more demanding photographers like Rob S (and you, Herb) within the fold. And that must be a good thing.

unfortunately, the Japanese domestic market doesn't account for a lot of any of the manufacture's total sales. last year, Nikon sold just about a million D70's around the world. i'm not sure of the exact figures, but Canon accounted for somewhere around 1.1-1.3 million more of the worldwide DSLR pie. Nikon also sold a few D2H, D1X, and D100 units to go along with the D70 too. given that total Japanese DSLR production for last year was just under 2.5 million units, there isn't much left for anybody else.

The *ist DS is certainly holding it's own, so it seems. I know it said that Canon has so many DSLR models out that no one of theirs is ahead, but that likely they sell the most total DSLR's, but none-the-less, Pentax seems to be quite in the fray.
