You can always find the F and A series F2.8 macros around the traps second
hand. I had the F series until I lost it at the start of the year. Mr
Insurance Company replaced it with a Sigma 105mm/ 2.8 EX macro. I am
seriously considering swapping it out for an FA 50mm/2.8. I don't like the
focusing clutch thingy on the Sigma., and I really miss my F series 50mm macro.
I found that for flowers and non moving objects the 50mm is fine. For
things that move, or things that tend to fly/run/crawl away when you get
too close, 105mm can be a tad on the short side. 50mm is usually way too
close. The problem with the next step, 180mm or 200mm is the flash sync
required.
