I'm seeking advice on what PC software to get for adjusting and converting individual and batches of RAW files. If there is a software that can additionally rename batches of files that will be a plus. Easier is better for me....
(Please don't recommend Photoshop, for I don't want to spend what that costs.)

I recommend PhotoShop Elements 3. And along with it I used IrfanView which a free ware. With addition of this http://www.earthboundlight.com/phototips/photoshop-elements-curves.html
it becomes quite a tool.
YMMV of course.
