Of course, these folks are using the camera meterless, all manual mode, relying upon guesstimate exposure or a hand-held meter. Guesstimates with a digital SLR body are less of a problem than with film, of course, since you can review an exposure immediately and check the histogram.
I found this to be too much of a pain in the butt for my general use (as well as not liking any of the modern Nikon SLR bodies) ... that's why I dumped my Nikon gear in the first place, and one of the reasons I was so happy to find the Pentax *ist-DS ... Support for metering with legacy Pentax manual focus lenses is a boon. But for those willing to deal with working that way with their Nikon gear, the results are fine.
