We do the same thing, except we number our sets. We must have at least 8 sets of four NiMHs. We have both a fast charger and an overnight charger that does more than just AAs. I've found that I can't use alkalines in the D. I got maybe 15 shots off a set the one time I had to use them. (Of course, they could have been bad batteries; I got them at a newsstand. :)
This seems to be a common failing with alkalines. Even in the lowly Optio, you will only get half a dozen or so from a set of good name batteries, that then go on to provide loads of light in a flash. Another joy of digital 8-)
