The latest video phones cost a couple of hundred (at most), and if you
only want one that sends still photos, it's way less.  And, if you get
your phone with a service bundle as part of the deal, it's (apparent)
price is quite a bit less.

It's one thing to upgrade something of that price, especially if it's
such a part of popular culture, and a "must have" item for one's peer
group.

DSLR's are an awful lot more than a couple of hundred, especially if
one is upgrading from entry-level.  Plus, there simply aren't the
social pressures to get the latest and greatest features.
