Actually, you have to pay those taxes on the ~value~ of any equipment
~acquired~ outside of Canada (not just bought).  There is no tax on
gifts under $60.  Gifts over $60 are taxable on their value over $60
(the first $60 being exempt).

I know this from very recent personal experience.
