Are you using a hub? Is it an active hub? The behavior you mention often happens when there is not enough power at the USB port for both devices. An active hub provides additional power.
The other possibility (slight in the case of a mouse and camera) is the drivers are trying to use the same address space. That happens when I have my flatbed and film scanners (both USB) active at the same time, I have to unplug one to use the other.

I tried my D somewhere else with same results. I am pretty sure I broke the port on the ist. I bought an external reader and voila!
