Seems clear that prices for certain used Pentax lenses have popped up quite

My feeling is that prices of used lenses were low due to people switching systems back when the *istD was an expensive competitor to the 300D and D70. When the *istDS came out with backwards compatibility with older lenses, prices went back up again. They'll stay high for as long as (a) new Pentax primes in the same ranges are scarce, and (b) K-mount DSLRs continue to sell well.
