Well, it was batteries. That old Nikon is a power hog, and its battery
meter is not so accurate (similar to IstD, from what I heard here).
Sometimes the batteries seemed still full and enough for many more
shots but they couldn't deliver enough current for both taking the
image and then writing it to card, I assume. So the camera locked up.
I have confirmed that this problem goes away with newer batteries, and
I can also try to recondition the old ones. Apparently that happened
several times during the event rendering the card corrupted enough
that the PC couldn't read it whole.
