Data points:
- A 4x ND filter is quite usable on the *ist D/DS, even the B+W type 106 is usable in bright light. Same for the Canon 10D. It depends on the lens, of course, but I've fitted it to even the F100-300/4.5-5.6 at full zoom and not been incapacitated.
- A 4x ND filter on my KM A2, Oly C8080, and Sony F7x7 is quite usable too. The Type 106 gets a little dicey at longer focal lengths ... but it just takes a little more work to focus manually.

Can't do that as I don't have an istD or Ds. I know how things look
through my various other cameras, but their finders aren't the same as the
digi and autofocus finders.

So how's the view thru the finder with the ND filter?
See for yourself ... set your f/1.4 lens at f/2.8 and use the DoF preview ... :-)
